Treatable Areas
Upper Eyelids - the most common area for xanthelasma. Cholesterol deposits typically form near the inner corner of the eye and may extend across the eyelid. Lower Eyelids - less common but often described as cholesterol deposits under the eyes, appearing as small yellowish plaques.
Which Areas Can It Treat?
-
Upper Eyelids
The most common location for cholesterol deposit around eyes, xanthelasma here can stretch toward the inner canthus and may appear symmetrical.
-
Lower EyelidsWhile less frequent, eye cholesterol deposits on eyelids can also present on the lower lid, often described as spots under eyes cholesterol.
-
Eyelid Creases and Outer Eye Corners
Occasionally, xanthelasma plaques extend toward the lateral canthus or into the fine folds around the eye, which can complicate makeup application or lead to concerns about appearance.
-
Cheek-Eye JunctionIn rare instances, deposits may migrate slightly toward the upper cheek, creating a smudged or patchy look.
What is xanthelasma?
Xanthelasma is a form of localised lipid (fat) accumulation within the skin, most commonly affecting the eyelids. It develops when cholesterol deposits collect beneath the surface, forming flat or slightly raised plaques.
Although xanthelasma is not harmful, it can sometimes be linked to underlying lipid imbalances or metabolic factors. These deposits do not resolve on their own and may gradually increase in size without treatment..
How Does Xanthelasma Treatment Work?
At rtwskin clinic, we offer laser xanthelasma removal using advanced Erbium:YAG and CO₂ lasers. The goal is to gently ablate the affected skin layers where the fatty deposit on eyelid sits, without damaging surrounding tissue. This laser treatment for xanthelasma is performed under local anaesthetic, making the procedure comfortable while ensuring precision.
Xanthelasma laser treatment is safe, quick and particularly beneficial for those who want to avoid surgical excision or cryotherapy. It allows for accurate removal of lipid plaques with minimal trauma to surrounding skin, making it ideal for the delicate eye area. Our clinicians are highly experienced in performing xanthelasma removal laser procedures safely and with lasting results.
What Problems Does It Solve?
-
The removal of xanthelasma improves not just physical appearance but often confidence and emotional comfort. Whether it’s removing cholesterol lumps under eyes or addressing the cosmetic concerns linked to eye cholesterol deposits on eyelids, our treatments help clients feel more like themselves again.
-
While these lesions aren’t harmful, some people feel they draw unwanted attention or lead to questions about health. Our approach addresses both medical clarity and visual results.
Long-Lasting and Effective Results
Most patients see significant improvement after just one session of laser removal of xanthelasma. However, recurrence is possible if underlying cholesterol levels remain high. Maintenance care may be discussed with your practitioner.
We provide realistic outcomes based on each client’s skin type and lesion size. Before initiating treatment, we explain the full xanthelasma removal cost (UK) and what to expect both during and after the session.
In cases where removing cholesterol deposits is part of managing an underlying condition, we also refer patients for medical lipid management. This holistic approach ensures long-term aesthetic and health benefits for our clients.
How to recognise xanthelasma
- Yellow or cream-coloured patches
- Flat or slightly raised plaques
- Located on upper or lower eyelids
- Often appears near inner eye corners
- Painless and slow-growing
Do I need a medical assessment?
Although xanthelasma itself is harmless, it can sometimes be associated with underlying cholesterol imbalance or metabolic conditions. In some cases, these deposits may be an early visible sign of elevated lipid levels.
At rtwskin, your consultation includes a detailed assessment of your skin, medical history, and risk factors to determine whether further investigation is recommended. Where appropriate, we may advise checking your cholesterol levels or liaising with your GP to ensure a comprehensive approach to your health.
For many patients, xanthelasma is purely cosmetic. However, identifying any underlying causes can help reduce the risk of recurrence and support long-term results after treatment.
Xanthelasma treatment options — laser vs surgery
-
reatment for xanthelasma depends on the size, depth, and location of the deposits and may include:
-
Laser removal — a precise, minimally invasive method that removes the affected tissue layer by layer
-
Surgical excision — typically used for larger or deeper lesions
-
Chemical cautery — less commonly used for small or superficial deposits
-
At rtwskin, we treat xanthelasma using advanced Erbium:YAG and CO₂ laser technology, allowing for controlled and targeted removal without damaging surrounding skin.
Laser treatment is often preferred due to its high precision, reduced risk of scarring, and shorter recovery time. This makes it particularly suitable for the delicate eye area, where achieving a smooth and natural-looking result is essential.
Surgical removal may be recommended in more advanced cases but can involve longer healing and a higher likelihood of visible scarring.

Learn more about Xanthelasma treatment
Can Xanthelasma return post treatment?
There is a very small chance Xanthelasma will return in the same area or another area even after treatment. This is one of the main reasons why we do not advise surgical removal of Xanthelasma as it can leave a scar and further surgical excisions may end up in excess skin removal. Erbium or CO2 Laser removal offers accuracy and removes the lesion with little or no scarring and little or no resulting pigmentation both which occur at higher rates with other forms of removal.
How many Xanthelasma treatments will I need?
Just the one! Naturally, the area will be sensitive to sun for a few months, and you should use a sunscreen of SPF at least 30 for about 6 months.
How much will the removal of Xanthelasma cost me?
Take a look at our price list and you’ll get an idea of the range. Prices start from £450. Don’t forget you can join our loyalty scheme and save money on regular treatments, so that’s a lovely bonus. We will be open and honest about prices when we meet for a chat at the very first consultation, so that you can make your decision in your own time.
