How it Works

How does Lanluma work?

Collagen is a protein that helps give skin its strength and support. As collagen and volume decrease, skin can feel less firm and contours may change.

Lanluma contains poly-L-lactic acid, usually shortened to PLLA. These particles encourage new collagen to form in the treated area. The aim is to build support and volume gradually, while keeping the result in proportion with your face or body.

Which Areas Can Lanluma Treat?

Lanluma can be used for selected concerns on the face, neck and body. The right approach depends on whether the main concern is lost volume, skin firmness, contour or dimpling.
Face and neck
Lanluma V may help restore volume in areas such as the cheeks and temples, support the jawline and improve skin firmness. On the neck, treatment focuses on skin quality and firmness. The aim is a gradual, balanced improvement that suits your existing features.
Bum lift and body contouring
A Lanluma bum lift uses Lanluma X injections to improve buttock shape and fullness through collagen stimulation. It may suit someone seeking a modest change in contour without surgery, implants or fat transfer.
Lanluma can also soften the appearance of hip dips: the natural inward curves at the sides of the hips. Treatment is planned around your anatomy and proportions. It cannot guarantee a particular shape or the same degree of change as surgery.
Hands, arms and changes after weight loss
Lanluma may also be considered for reduced skin firmness or volume in the hands and arms, and for selected changes after weight loss. Your consultation will establish whether collagen stimulation can address the concern or whether another approach would be more appropriate.

Treatment may be considered for cellulite on the buttocks, thighs or hips. The choice depends on the type of cellulite and the condition of your skin; complete removal of cellulite is not a realistic promise. Read more about our cellulite treatments.

Lanluma for Cellulite and Uneven Skin Texture

Lanluma can be used as part of an individualised treatment approach for cellulite, skin dimpling and uneven skin texture. At rtwskin in Tunbridge Wells, we can combine Lanluma with subcision using a cannula.

Cellulite dimpling can be associated with fibrous bands beneath the skin that pull it downwards, creating visible depressions and an uneven surface. Using a cannula, we can carefully release these bands — a technique known as subcision — to help reduce dimpling.

Following subcision, Lanluma is injected into the treated area to stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production. The aim is to encourage gradual improvement in skin thickness, firmness and overall texture, helping the treated area appear smoother and more even.

Results develop gradually, as collagen production takes time. The number of treatments required depends on how pronounced and widespread the cellulite is, how loose the skin is and your individual anatomy.

Is Lanluma Right for You?

Lanluma may be an option if you would like to improve lost volume, skin firmness or contours and are comfortable with a result that develops over time.

It may be worth considering if you:

Have noticed a loss of fullness in your face or changes in your neck skin.
Would like to improve buttock shape or soften the appearance of hip dips.
Are concerned about selected areas of cellulite or changes after weight loss.
Prefer a gradual improvement and can follow the recommended aftercare.

Lanluma is not a weight-loss treatment and does not remove excess skin. If you want a substantial lift, a large increase in volume or an immediate change, another treatment may better suit your aim.

Please tell us about allergies, medicines, previous fillers or implants, skin conditions and any problems with healing or scarring. What Happens During Lanluma Treatment?

A Lanluma appointment usually takes 45–60 minutes. The treatment area, amount of product and your comfort all form part of the plan.

Consultation and planning

We begin by understanding what you would like to change and assessing your skin and proportions. Your practitioner explains what Lanluma may achieve, its limitations, possible side effects and the proposed cost. You have time to ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.

Preparation and injections

The treatment area is prepared and local anaesthetic is used. Lanluma is injected into the planned areas to encourage collagen production. You may feel pressure or some discomfort; tell your practitioner if you need a pause.

Aftercare and the next step

Your practitioner explains how to care for the treated area, including massage, and what to expect as swelling settles. Any further treatment is planned around the initial treatment and your developing response.

How many vials and sessions will I need?

The amount of Lanluma depends on the area, starting volume and intended improvement. Typical vial quantities used at rtwskin include:

Buttock enhancement - 2 vials

The final quantity is tailored to your treatment plan. More than one session may be recommended. Your practitioner will explain the number of sessions and spacing appropriate to your plan, allowing time for the collagen response to develop.

Lanluma Results: Before and After

Lanluma results develop gradually, usually over around 8–12 weeks. Depending on the area treated, you may notice improved fullness, firmer-looking skin or smoother contours.

The fullness seen straight after treatment is partly due to the fluid used to prepare the injections and temporary swelling. This settles before the longer-term collagen response becomes visible. Give the treatment time before judging the outcome.

How long does Lanluma last?

Results may last up to two years, although this varies with your skin, the area treated and your response. Lanluma does not stop the natural ageing process, and the result is not permanent.

Will I need maintenance treatment?

Maintenance treatment may be considered when the benefits begin to fade. Your practitioner can assess whether further treatment would be useful, based on your response and how long the result has lasted.

Recovery, Side Effects and Aftercare

Swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness can occur after Lanluma injections. These often improve over the following days, although bruising or swelling can take longer to settle. Plan your appointment with this in mind if you have an important event.

Caring for the treated area

Massage the area as demonstrated by your practitioner. Follow the frequency and duration given for your treatment area, using clean hands.
Keep the injection sites clean and avoid rubbing or applying unnecessary pressure while they are sore.
Follow your aftercare advice on exercise, heat, swimming and applying skincare or make-up. Recovery advice can differ between the face and body.
Contact the clinic if symptoms are worsening, you develop a persistent lump, or you are unsure whether recovery is progressing as expected.

Other possible risks

Lanluma can also cause lumps or nodules beneath the skin, unevenness, infection or a prolonged inflammatory reaction. Some problems may appear later and may need treatment. Injection procedures also carry a rare risk of injury to a blood vessel or an interruption to the skin’s blood supply.

Lanluma cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase, the medicine used to dissolve some hyaluronic acid fillers. Careful assessment and treatment planning are therefore important.

Seek urgent medical advice for severe or increasing pain, pale or mottled skin, spreading redness, heat, discharge or fever. Contact rtwskin promptly rather than waiting for a routine review. Sudden loss of vision or difficulty breathing requires emergency help: call 999.

Is Lanluma a dermal filler?

Lanluma is often described as a collagen-stimulating filler. It contains PLLA and encourages new collagen to form, so its longer-term effect develops gradually. Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume more directly. The right choice depends on the area, your concern and the type of result you would like.

What is the difference between Lanluma X and Lanluma V?

At rtwskin, Lanluma X is used for body treatment, including buttock contouring and selected cellulite concerns. Lanluma V is used for the face and neck. Your practitioner selects the product and amount for the area and the planned improvement.

Is a Lanluma bum lift the same as a Brazilian butt lift?

No. A Brazilian butt lift is a surgical procedure involving fat transfer. A Lanluma bum lift uses injections to stimulate collagen and gradually improve fullness and contour. It does not provide the same degree of volume change as surgery, and it still carries injection-related risks.

How does Lanluma compare with Sculptra?

Lanluma and Sculptra both contain PLLA and work through gradual collagen stimulation. They are different products, with their own preparation and treatment requirements. Suitability depends on the area and your individual needs; neither is the best choice for everyone.

Can I return to work after Lanluma?

This depends on the area treated, your job and how you feel afterwards. Swelling, bruising or tenderness may affect comfort or how soon you want to return to public-facing work. Physical work may need more planning. Discuss your usual activities at consultation so the advice fits your day.

Will I be able to sit comfortably after a Lanluma bum lift?

The buttocks may feel tender or swollen after treatment, so sitting can be uncomfortable at first. Follow the advice given for your treatment on pressure, sitting, sleeping and massage. Contact the clinic if pain is increasing or feels more severe than expected.
