How Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Works

Could anti-wrinkle treatment help you?

Anti-wrinkle injections can help soften lines that become more noticeable when you frown, smile or raise your eyebrows. These expression lines are also called dynamic wrinkles. Cosmetic anti-wrinkle injections at rtwskin are only available to adults aged 18 and over.

The injections use botulinum toxin type A to temporarily reduce the signals that make selected muscles contract. As these muscles relax, the skin above them creases less.

At rtwskin, we use BOTOX® from Allergan Aesthetics and Relfydess® from Galderma. Both are botulinum toxin type A medicines, with different formulations and dosing requirements. Relfydess is supplied as a ready-to-use solution.

In studies of Relfydess for frown lines and crow’s feet, effects typically began within two to three days. Some patients still showed improvement at six months. Results and duration vary between patients.

Your practitioner will recommend a suitable option based on your facial anatomy, muscle movement and treatment goals.

The aim is a more rested appearance, with the degree of softening matched to your features and preferences. We assess how your whole face moves, so the treatment plan takes account of the balance between your forehead, brows and eyes.

Deep lines that remain when your face is at rest, loose skin or lost facial volume may need a different approach. Your practitioner will explain what injections can realistically achieve and whether another treatment would be more suitable.

Which areas can be treated?

The right treatment depends on the concern and the muscles involved. Explore the options below, then discuss the areas that matter to you at your consultation.

  • Forehead and frown lines

Horizontal forehead lines appear when you raise your eyebrows. Frown lines are the vertical creases between them. Treatment can soften the muscle activity behind these expressions. Your practitioner assesses the forehead and brow together to plan a balanced result. Learn more about frown lines treatment.

  • Crow’s feet

Crow’s feet are the fine lines that fan out from the outer corners of the eyes when you smile or squint. Carefully placed injections can soften these movement-related lines. Assessment focuses on the eye area and how it moves with your smile. Read about crow’s feet treatment.

  • Eyebrow lift

An eyebrow lift with injections may create a subtle change in brow position by relaxing muscles that pull the brows down. It can be considered for mild heaviness or uneven brows, depending on your anatomy. Your assessment helps establish how much change is realistic. Explore eyebrow lift treatment.

  • Lip flip

A lip flip may help when the upper lip curls inwards or becomes less visible as you smile. Small injections relax the muscle around the upper lip, allowing its edge to turn slightly outwards. This changes the lip’s position without adding filler volume. Read about the lip flip.

  • Gummy smile

If an overactive upper lip exposes more gum when you smile, muscle-relaxing treatment may help reduce that movement. Gum display can also have dental or structural causes, so an assessment comes first. We explain whether injections are appropriate or another opinion would be helpful. Explore gummy smile treatment.

  • Downturned mouth corners

Treatment may soften a downward pull at the corners of the mouth and improve mild marionette lines where muscle activity contributes. Deeper folds or loss of support may need a different plan. Your practitioner will assess the cause before recommending injections. Learn about treatment for marionette lines and mouth corners.

  • Jawline definition

Muscle-relaxing injections may be one option when tension around the jaw and neck contributes to reduced definition. A jawline assessment also considers loose skin and loss of facial support, as these can require other treatments. The approach depends on what is causing the change. Explore non-surgical jaw lift options.

  • Neck bands

Visible vertical neck bands can become more prominent when the neck muscles contract. Treatment may soften these bands and reduce muscular pull on the lower face in suitable patients. Your clinician assesses the neck and jawline together before advising on the likely benefit. Read about neck treatment.

Medical Treatment Options

Treatment for medical concerns

  • Botulinum toxin is also used for selected medical concerns. These services have their own assessment, treatment plan and follow-up, separate from cosmetic wrinkle reduction.

  • Teeth grinding and jaw clenching

  • Treatment for bruxism targets overactive jaw muscles and may reduce the force of clenching and associated tension. It does not address every cause of teeth grinding, and dental care may still be needed. Your consultation helps identify the appropriate next step. Learn about bruxism treatment.

Excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis means sweating more than the body needs to control its temperature. Injections may reduce excessive sweating by temporarily blocking the signals that stimulate sweat glands. We assess the affected area and how sweating affects daily life before discussing treatment. Read about hyperhidrosis treatment.

Chronic migraine

Botox may be considered as a preventative treatment for suitable adults with chronic migraine. It is not suitable for every headache and does not provide immediate relief during a migraine attack. Assessment includes your symptoms, migraine history and previous treatments to establish whether it may help. Explore treatment for chronic migraine.

Your consultation and treatment

Your consultation and treatment

1.Consultation

Your practitioner asks about your concerns, medical history, medicines and previous treatment. They assess your face at rest and in movement. A qualified prescriber confirms whether prescription treatment is suitable.

2.Treatment plan and price

We agree which areas to treat and discuss the expected improvement, limitations and possible side effects. Your total cost is explained before treatment, so you can make an informed decision.

3.Treatment

Once you are comfortable with the plan and have given consent, the skin is cleaned and small injections are placed in the selected areas. You may feel brief stinging or discomfort. Tell your practitioner if you need a pause.

4. Aftercare

Before you leave, we explain how to care for the treated areas, which activities to avoid and how to contact the clinic if you have concerns.

5. Review

Your practitioner reviews how the treatment has settled and whether any adjustment is appropriate. A top-up is considered only if needed, following assessment.

Before your appointment, have details of your medicines and allergies ready and arrive with clean skin. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the clinician who prescribes them advises you to.

Results

When will you see a difference?

  • Results develop gradually. You may notice some softening during the first few days, but allow 14 days before assessing the full effect of facial anti-wrinkle treatment.

  • How long do results last?

  • Facial anti-wrinkle results typically last around 3–4 months. The product used, area treated, muscle activity and your individual response all affect this. Treatments such as a lip flip or Relfydess have different expected durations, which your clinician will explain.

Will you need repeat treatment?

The effect is temporary. If you wish to maintain the result, your practitioner will advise when another treatment may be appropriate. Repeat appointments are planned around your response and preferences, rather than a fixed course for everyone.

The aim is to soften the lines that concern you while respecting your natural expression. The amount of improvement varies, and injections may not remove every line.

Is anti-wrinkle treatment suitable for you?

Suitability is decided during your consultation, after a review of your health and the areas you would like to treat.

Treatment is not offered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with certain neuromuscular disorders, which affect the nerves and muscles. An active infection at an injection site can also mean treatment needs to be postponed. Tell your practitioner about medical conditions, medicines, allergies and any previous reaction to injections.

  • Possible side effects

  • Temporary redness, swelling, bruising or tenderness may occur around the injection points. Some people experience a headache. Less commonly, treatment can cause an uneven result or temporary heaviness or drooping of a brow or eyelid. Your clinician will explain the risks relevant to your treatment.

  • When to get advice

  • Contact rtwskin promptly if you develop eyelid or brow drooping, an unexpected change in facial movement, or symptoms that worsen rather than settle. These need assessment; do not try to correct them yourself. Use the aftercare contact details provided by the clinic.

  • Seek urgent medical help if you develop difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing after treatment. Call 999 for severe breathing difficulties.

Caring for your skin after treatment

Most patients can return to everyday activities soon after facial anti-wrinkle injections. Small marks, redness or swelling may be visible initially, and bruising can take longer to settle. Allow for this when planning around an event.

  • Stay upright for four hours after treatment.

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours.

  • Leave two weeks before facials, peels or laser treatments. Discuss planned dental work with your practitioner so they can advise on timing.

  • Follow any additional advice for your treatment area and the review arrangements agreed with your practitioner.

For more detail on bruising, read Dr Nina’s guidance on reducing bruising after aesthetic injections. Contact the clinic if you are unsure whether a reaction is expected.
