Moles Removal

Moles are small clusters of pigmented cells that appear on the skin and are usually harmless. However, for many people, moles can cause discomfort, aesthetic concern, or anxiety-especially if they are raised, change in appearance, or are located in visible areas like the face or neck.

Which Areas Can It Treat?

  • Face

The most common site for cosmetic mole removal. We specialise in the removal of moles on the face using advanced techniques that minimise scarring and preserve skin tone and texture.

  • Neck

Moles on the neck can be irritated by clothing or jewellery. We use precision methods, often including shave removal of moles, to ensure both safety and aesthetic outcome.

  • Chest and Back

These areas often contain larger or multiple moles. Depending on the mole’s depth, we may recommend mole removal by laser surgery or other tailored approaches.

  • Shoulders and Arms

Frequently exposed to the sun, moles in these areas can undergo changes and may require removal for both medical and cosmetic reasons.

  • Legs

We carefully remove moles from the legs while protecting skin elasticity and pigmentation.

  • Scalp

Often hidden by hair, moles on the scalp may go unnoticed. Early removal prevents complications and ensures a clean cosmetic result.

How It Works

How It Works

The process begins with a clinical consultation, often accompanied by dermoscopy or digital mole mapping. If the mole is benign and the goal is cosmetic, we proceed with the most appropriate removal method. Suspicious moles may require further evaluation, such as Biopsying a Mole, before treatment.

The most commonly used technique at our clinic is laser moles removal, which uses concentrated light to break down pigmented tissue without damaging the surrounding skin. For raised or deep moles, surgical excision may be advised.

We also address patient concerns about moles that change in appearance. In such cases, Checking Moles and regular skin assessments play a crucial role in early detection and intervention.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

How Is the Procedure Performed?

Depending on the nature of your mole, we may recommend one of the following:

  • Shave removal of moles – A quick, minimally invasive technique used primarily for raised lesions. It involves shaving the mole flush with the skin under local anaesthetic.
  • Moles removal laser – Suitable for flat or pigmented moles. This method requires no stitches and offers excellent cosmetic outcomes.
  • Excision with sutures – Often used for larger or deeper moles, or when malignancy cannot be excluded. This is the best mole removal procedure when comprehensive removal is necessary.

In all cases, your comfort and safety are prioritised. The surgery mole removal cost depends on the complexity, mole size, location and the technique used.

Treatment Process

Will the procedure leave scarring?

Our doctors are highly experienced in skin surgery and have performed hundreds of mole and other skin lesion removals with excellent results using laser or surgery. The technique used for removing the mole depends on factors such as diagnosis, size and location of the mole.

  • Moles that are flat and light coloured are often difficult to remove and they often leave a small scar.

  • Small moles can be shaved down to the level of the surrounding skin. This procedure will usually not leave a scar.

  • Laser surgery is an ideal treatment for benign and raised moles. This is a painless procedure with a very little risk of scarring.

  • Big or suspicious moles are removed with a scalpel under local anaesthetic and the wound is closed with stitches.

  • Side effects:

  • The numbness caused the local anaesthetic, this usually lasts 1 hour.

  • Discomfort, swelling, blistering, or bruising around the operation site, this usually lasts around 2 – 3 days.

  • Pigment changes (skin colour). During the healing process, there is a possibility that the treated area can become either lighter (hypopigmentation) or darker (hyperpigmentation) in colour. This is usually temporary, but, on very rare occasions, it may be permanent. You should avoid sun exposure after the treatment and use a high factor sunblock to minimise the risk of this happening.

  • Scarring may be noticeable, but it depends on the location of the lesion and how much healthy skin needs to be removed. Some patients get better results if they use bio-oil or silicon gels such as Dermatix or Kelocote, which you can get from a pharmacist, this needs to be applied regularly for 3 months post-treatment.

  • Most scars heal normally but a small percentage of people have an inherited tendency to form scars that are unusually red and raised. These are called Keloid scars. It is very important that you follow all post-treatment instructions carefully which were laid out in your informed consent form.

  • Your Preparation:

  • Do not apply any creams to the treated area prior to treatment.

  • Stop using skin care products on the area to be treated that contain alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA’s), Retinol or Vitamin A at least 5 days before your procedure.

Post-Treatment Care

  • Scabbing will form over the treated area, and it will take 1–2 weeks to fall off naturally.

  • It may leave some temporary discoloration in the area, and in most cases, this will clear within a few weeks, depending on individual healing time.

  • Do not pick at the scabs, this is the biggest reason scars form.

  • Prematurely removed scabs may also cause hyperpigmentation.

  • Do not shower for 24 hours. Do not swim for two weeks.

  • After treatment the area may feel irritated, tender and/or red. To prevent any infection, apply topical antibacterial cream twice a day for 2-3 days.

  • If the area is irritated apply topical Antibacterial cream such as Fucidin as directed by your doctor. If possible, keep the area dry and open during the day. Pat the area dry after bathing, do not rub as it may remove the scab prematurely.

  • Do not expose yourself to direct sun. When healed, apply sun block during the day, even in winter or on cloudy & rainy days, to avoid sun exposure for at least one-month post treatment.

  • Do not use peeling or bleaching products for at least a month. Do not apply moisturisers or make up to the treated area(s) until the crust has fallen off and healing is complete.

  • Clear your skin and shower after the initial period using only mild products with no alcohol content.

  • Throughout your course of treatments, we recommend the continued use of at least an SPF50. Protecting the area is key to getting a great result!

  • If you experience any adverse reactions, please call 01892 222222, for out of hours, call 01892 266555.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should you have your mole checked?

If you notice anything out of the ordinary, if you spot a new mole or skin lesion, or notice an existing mole or lesion has changed in shape, size, or colour then please have it checked by a professional. Our dermatologist will thoroughly examine the mole with a dermascope. With this tool, we can view the pigment structure of the mole in accurate detail, which provides information as to whether the mole is harmless and whether it is advisable to have it removed. If a biopsy is recommended, we send the mole/skin lesion on to Nuffield Health for testing and diagnosis.

Is the procedure painful?

No, it’s not painful. Our state-of-the-art laser equipment means that most moles are easy to remove without any pain.

How many treatments will I need?

Just one, and the entire visit will take less than an hour..
