How it Works

Birthmark removal begins with a consultation to identify the type of birthmark and determine whether laser, IPL or surgical removal may be suitable. Where light-based treatment is recommended, a patch test is completed before the procedure to assess skin response and select appropriate settings.

For suitable pigmented birthmarks, treatment targets pigment within the mark. For suitable vascular birthmarks, treatment targets the visible blood vessels. Raised lesions may require a different approach, including surgical assessment.

The treated area may temporarily darken, swell or crust before gradually becoming lighter. Several sessions may be required, and the aim may be significant lightening rather than complete removal.

Different wavelengths of laser light are absorbed by either pigment or blood vessels, depending on the type of birthmark.

For pigmented birthmarks – The laser energy is absorbed by the melanin, breaking the pigment into tiny fragments. Over time, your body naturally clears these fragments away through its lymphatic system.
For vascular birthmarks – The laser targets the haemoglobin in the blood vessels. The heat from the laser causes the vessels to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body, reducing or eliminating the red or purple colouring.
