Milia - rtwskin clinic

Milia

Milia are tiny white cysts that are located immediately below the epidermis. The white colour comes from an excessive build-up of keratin which becomes trapped when dead skin cells are not exfoliated sufficiently.  Unlike blackheads (open comedones) and whiteheads (closed comedones), milia do not develop into acne lesions. Some people are genetically prone to developing milia spots but they are most often caused by the use of skincare products and cosmetics that contain heavy oils, particularly mineral oil or lanolin.

    Milia Removal
    from £120

Unless you professionally remove these spots from the face, they do not go away. The most common type of milia removal is performed using a needle.  The removal procedure is very simple.  Once the area of the skin with milia has been thoroughly cleansed, a sterile needle is then used to create a tiny incision in the skin covering the milia and the contents are carefully extracted either with a comedone extractor or forceps, preventing any unnecessary trauma to the skin.

Certain types of milia may need to be treated by laser. Laser works to remove the top layer of the skin covering the milia.  This will then allow the contents to be carefully extracted. For multiple lesions, topical retinoids may be helpful to encourage deeper exfoliation of surface skin cells prior to the removal process.

If milia become very widespread and persistent, we may suggest various other treatments, such as laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and medical grade skincare.

At rtwskin we offer a range of facials, microdermabrasion, peels and resurfacing procedures strongly advised for the prevention of milia.

Excellent skincare products and natural mineral cosmetics will help prevent the appearance of milia. The advice will generally be to use a salicylic wash in the morning to remove excess oil from the skin and a retinol cream would be recommended in the evening to provide the skin with superior topical exfoliation treatment. However, here at rtwskin, we understand that we are all individuals and would recommend that your skin is thoroughly assessed by our expert practitioners. This will ensure the correct products are offered, specifically for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whats involved in the Treatment?

The only way milia can be removed is by inserting a lance needle to break through their membranes then gently extracting the pearly matter. It may leave a tiny pinprick mark, but these tend to disappear within 24 hours. We use disposable lance needles for this process.

What can I expect from the treatment?

Depending on your skin ailments and to achieve optimum results, we might also recommend treatments that exfoliate the skin such as a Skin Peel, Medical Microdermabrasion or a steam and extraction facial in conjunction with lancing. Using a retinoid based product at home will also help to prevent future Milias.
